Geocache Description:

This cache takes to you on a tour to discover Shanghai's ancient past, its colonial heritage and its modern present. From Shanghai's famous Old Town to Pudong's skyscrapers you can see all facets of this old and modern metropolis. As a little extra, the cache will take you close to 3 other caches that you can do on the way.

Quick facts:
Type: Urban Multi
Distance: approx. 3km
Duration: about 1h-2h
Entrance/Transportation fees: 2-30 RMB to cross the river
Opening Times: till 18:00h
Transportation: Bus lines 11, 930, 920, 802, 64 (Xiao Dong Men), 24, 581, 64, 715 (Yu Yuan)

Stage 1: Cheng Huang Miao (N31 13.621 E121 29.268)
The Cheng Huang Miao (Temple of the Town Gods) is very popular with Chinese worshipers and tourists alike. Here you can feel the religious spirit as you walk trough the halls. For the cache you don't need to enter but I highly recommend it anyway.
For the cache look up to the north roof of the yard. There you can see dragons on the roof. How many are there = A?

Stage 2: Zig-Zag Bridge (N31 13.7(A-1)9 E121 29.(A-2)28)
Now you in the heart of Yu Yuan at the famous bridge. In the old China many bridges where build in a zig-zag way to prevent evil spirits to cross (who can old walk straight). In the middle of the bridge you find Shanghai's most famous Tea House, the Mid-Lake Pavilion Teahouse. If you have time take a break here and enjoy a cup of Longjing Tea and listen to traditional Chinese live music (FRI, SAT and SUN at 6:30 pm).
Back to the cache: How many "zigs" and "zags" (corners) does the bridge have? In other words, How often do you have to turn when crossing the bridge to the other side. The number is B.

Stage 3: Strange Creatures (N31 13.(B-8)44 E121 29.2(B-A-11)8)
Yu Yuan is famous for its food places and also for its art markets. Don't be fooled by the various sales people everywhere. Lots of the stuff is fake or the price is much to high. You have to bargain them down by at least 200% till you reach an acceptable level. But anywhere there are much better places in the city if you know where to look.
For the cache turn you attention to the two strange looking creatures at the entrance of one of the art markets. Not the Lions but the ones with the half-moon shaped horns. How many teeth does each one have? The answer is C.

Stage 4: Glass Windows (N31 13.(C+(A/2))11 E121 29.(A-1)18)
This is a nice little park you can relax your tired feed.
You are standing on a wooden platform. How many glass windows are there on the ground = D?
It seems the glass windows are gone after reconstruction. However as it is on the way I recommend to pass this point anyways to see the lovely parl. Just use D=7

Stage 5: What a view! What is wrong? (N31 14.1A5 E121 29.2D1)
Go straight through the park and cross two streets. Now you should be at the south end of Shanghai's famous Bund. Now go north.
Here you can enjoy one of Shanghai's most fabulous views. But if you look closely, something is wrong here.

In which cell is the error in the photo? E is the value in the according cell of the grid.

Note: Since there is a lot of construction, this view will look totally different in 1 year or so. Therefore concentrate your search on the buildings that are already complete on the photo.

Stage 6: Let there be light (N31 14.290 E121 29.E)
No matter which number of the above you input for 'E' your next waypoint will be on the other side of the river (So this is no confirmation that you solved the above stage correctly!). Most locals can skip this part now, but for visitors crossing the river can be a little tricky. The most direct way is using the 'Bund Sightseeing Tunnel'. The entrance is around N31 14.539 E121 29.148. The exit on the Pudong side is fairly close to the next stage. However it costs 30 RMB one way or 40 RMB round trip. An alternative is using the ferry at N31 14.066 E121 29.306. It costs considerably less (2 RMB) but takes you further south. Once on the other side you can turn left once you exit the ferry station and just walk parallel to the river till you get to the next stage.

Now to the question: At that point you can see a number of tube shaped lights. The number of lights between the two stairs is F.
Afterwards get your reward by enjoying the view and by finding another tiny cache which is very close to where you are now.

Stage 7: Symmetric Pillars (N31 14.A22 E121 29.(F+3)D3)
Update: There seems to be a construction site where the pillars are (were) and a wall blocking the view. Until then you can calculate G=D*3
Keep your eyes open to the man made wonders of modern Shanghai, while walking to this stage. Once you are here you see a row of striped pillars that are positioned in a symmetrical order. How many of those pillars are there. The answer is G.
Before you continue to the final, check your GPS for other caches around.

Stage 8: The Final
You got all information together to find the cache. Now you just need to put it together! Here you can write down all variables again:

  • A: ______________
  • B: ______________
  • C: ______________
  • D: ______________
  • E: ______________
  • F: ______________
  • G: ______________

The cache is at:
N31 14.(G-17)(C)(D)
E121 (B*2).(F-5)(A*2)(A)

The Cache
The cache is a black nano cache. You need to look for a very, very small, black container with a magnet on the bottom. It is merely as high as a thumbnail. It contains a rolled up tiny log strip. Please make sure to know exactly where to look before you grab it. Otherwise you will not find it. Use the hint and if necessary the spoiler photos (which as the name hints will spoil your fun).
Please make sure you are not watched and that the cache does not fall into the water! Please make sure you are really careful that you are not being watched. There are lots of muggles around. Please hide the cache well again that it cannot be seen and make sure that the magnet holds firmly to the metal. The secrecy of this cache is essential for its survival as it has been muggled 2 times already! I really hope this one can stay longer. Please use the spoiler pictures to locate the cache, as if you do a lot of searching you will raise lots of attention, especially if you are a foreigner.
So with the pictures you can locate it without raising to much suspicion.

Maintenance Note
I live in Shanghai, so I will maintain the cache on a regular basis
