Geocache Description:

This cache is an ammo box located near Newbury Cut in Newbury, New Hampshire, along the former railbed of the Claremont to Concord Railroad, which is now a hiking and biking trail. You should access this railbed from the public trailhead on Mountain Rd.(so you don't cross through private property). The cache contains some cool stuff. Enjoy!

Following is an excerpt by Jeff Faust about Newbury Cut from his book, 'Mountain Bike New Hampshire': "Were it not for a fire in Montreal decades ago, this piece of the former Concord and Claremont Railroad might still be running trains. Newbury Cut is hailed as a marvel of nineteenth-century civil engineering. In his book 'Through Covered Bridges to Concord', Edgar Mead, Jr. describes the construction of Newbury Cut in 1871: 'A new-fangled steam drill was brought to bear, aimed at removing 10,000 feet of vicious conglomerate rock. The monster's chief weapon was a 2.5-inch bit. A full head of steam inched it forward at the rate of 9 feet in 50 minutes-rocketing progress compared to hand methods. Ten-pound charges of black powder reduced the conglomerate to fragments that could be used on the graceful, spiraling grades up out of the valley floor several hundred feet below.'"
Have a great hike!
