Geocache Description:

This cache can be found by following the Threave Estate walk and is a pleasant family walk. The cache is a round container and has room for a few small swops. Castle Douglas Cubs are looking after the cache and would like to log how far geocachers have travelled to find the cache. Please note down your hometown and country in the log book - thank you.

The footpath can be muddy and narrow in places, is not suitable for wheelchairs and stout footwear is recommended. The walk is waymarked and part of it is along the disused railway branch line from Castle Douglas to Kirkcudbright. The walk is just under two and a half miles (3.8 kms).

For more information on the walk go to (visit link) for background information on the walk including details of a detour to a bird hide.

The walk begins at N54°55.584, W003°56.875 where there is a small car park. Parking is also available in Threave Gardens at N54.55.395 W003 56.867. Threave Gardens is well worth a visit, has a Visitor Center and excellent restaurant.

The walk is waymarked but watch out for the following waypoints :
a) 54°55.407'N, 3°57.345'W - small wooden gate leading into woods.
b) 54°55.426'N, 3°57.842'W - cross A75 (west side)
c) 54°56.007'N, 3°57.262'W - footpath to Castle Douglas joins here.
d) 54°55.865'N, 3°57.049'W - cross A75 (east side). Just after this care should be taken when crossing the road which leads into Castle Douglas.
e) 54°55.764'N, 3°57.100'W - footpath right beside cottages

(Please Note : There is a farm road to the west of the cache which should not be used for access or a quick park and dash - please use the car park indicated here.)

For more information on Threave Gardens go to (visit link)

The walk can be extended by starting from Castle Douglas. Park in the town and walk to N 54°56.356, W003°56.513. A footpath from there leads to the Threave Estate walk. Return to Castle Douglas downhill along road bordering Threave Gardens and then along lochside pavement.

Castle Douglas Cubs are looking after the cache and would like to log how far geocachers have travelled to find the cache. Please note down your hometown and country in the log book - thank you.

Threave Castle, (54°56.345'N, 3°58.177'W) ancient stronghold of the Douglas family, is readily accessible from this walk and well worth the detour. Leave the footpath beside an old railway bridge at 54°55.912'N, 3°57.444'W. The castle walk starts from the nearby farm. A small boat takes you over the River Dee to the castle.
