Geocache Description:

This cache is in the Spenceville Wildlife Refuge, on the south side of Dry Creek, slightly upstream from the falls.

This morning I looked out at the beautiful weather and asked Molly, "So, would you rather watch the Superbowl or go hiking at Spenceville?" Molly doesn't quite get the concept of spectator sports, so off we went to take a walk and place a cache.

The trail to the cache begins at the green gate just before the burned out bridge at the end of Spenceville Road. A very well established trail will take you about .8 miles to a pond, which Molly highly recommends as a swimming hole for cachin' K9s. As you approach the pond, look to the left (east), and you'll see another (smaller) trail that follows a contour on the nearby hillside. Take a shortcut over to that trail, and continue on the trails all the way to the cache.

The total distance to the cache is just under 3 miles. Much of it is easy going, but there are some pretty steep sections. The cache is a 24 oz. plastic Rubbermaid container, and should be easy to find.

Less than .1 mile past the cache, the trail dead ends at Dry Creek, upstream from the falls. I didn't place the cache on this little "beach" because the last 300-400 feet of the trail descend a very steep, slippery (and possibly, in wetter weather, muddy) slope. I didn't find it scary or dangerous, but it might not be for everyone. Molly really, really appreciated the chance to cool off and get a drink in the creek and recommends it to other cachin' K9s.

At the end of the trail you are less than .2 mile from Whata Mix (GC137E) as the crow flies, on the other side of the creek. You can't see the falls from there, but you can catch a glimpse from the waypoint listed below.

I was originally going to make this a multi, but we had so much fun that I decided to place just the one today. I'll be back REALLY SOON to place a series of independent caches on this wonderful, remote-feeling trail.
