B-P's Legacy! Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

JamGuys: After giving it some thought, it's with a heavy heart that I've decided not to replace this cache. It's been logged just once in the past two years and even that was by accident. This cache was published six years ago and it does bring back some fond memories. There was a time when I actually used to drill holes in geocoins, attach them to keychains and "release them into the wild"! I started one out in this cache in 2007 but it and the other fourteen I released all went missing within a year or two. Whatever was I thinking? Anyway, thanks to all of you who made the journey and especially to those of you who gave it a Favorite rating ... that meant a lot to me. Adios, B-P ... your legacy shall endure.

B-P'S LEGACY!

Robert Baden-Powell (1857-1941) in Hussar dress uniform

In addition to being the centenary of Oklahoma's statehood, the year 2007 also marks one hundred years since the founding of the Boy Scout movement in England by Lord Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell. Baden-Powell, or "B-P" as he was familiarly known, began his military career in 1876 as a second lieutenant in the British Army's 13th Hussars cavalry regiment before becoming a national hero during the Siege of Mafeking in South Africa in 1899-1900. During the 217 day siege, B-P's book 'Aids to Scouting' was published and reached a far wider readership than the military one for which it was intended. In 1907, following his return to England, he held an experimental camp on Brownsea Island in Dorset, bringing together twenty-two boys of diverse social and economic backgrounds. Today, one hundred years later, the whole world celebrates the results of that camp. Coincidentally, February 22 (Founder's Day) this year will also mark B-P's 150th birthday! So, being a former Scout myself (in a different place and time, I might add), I've decided to honor these two important anniversaries with this very special cache!

Okay, so here we go! The true cache co-ordinates have been most cleverly incorporated into the colorful image you see below. However, you needn't be alarmed because, unlike some of my more recent efforts, this is actually a fairly simple puzzle. You can check your solution using the Evince co-ordinate verification tool below. However, you should know that there's a two-and-a-half mile roundtrip hike from parking involved (and that's assuming no missteps along the way!), so be sure to plan accordingly. Since the terrain you'll be traversing will most likely be unfamiliar to you, you may also want to mark a few waypoints on your GPSr as you proceed just in case you do manage to turn yourself around in the woods, heh heh! No hints will be given until the FTF prize has been claimed. Good luck and enjoy the hunt!!

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

CACHE LOCATION: The cache is hidden on the south side of Arcadia Lake on land leased to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC). Approval to place geocaches here was obtained from Mr. Damon Springer, the ODWC Aquatic Education Co-ordinator, on 4/12/11.

Please be aware that this area is open to WALK-IN traffic only, i.e. you MUST park at the front gate on the west side of Midwest Boulevard REGARDLESS OF WHETHER OR NOT THE GATE IS OPEN (i.e. please do not drive in beyond the front gate unless you have another good reason to be there). Failure to do so will jeopardize our ability to maintain caches here.

Please be aware that there is an archery deer harvest season in this area annually from October through December and it will then be illegal for you to enter the area without a valid deer hunting permit. The cache listing will be disabled during this time. As always, keep an eye out for poison plants, ticks, snakes, and other potentially harmful creatures.

CACHE CONTENTS: The container is a 7.62 mm ammo can that contains a logbook, a pen, and a number of useful scouting-related items. In keeping with the cache theme, the FTF prize is a rare and highly sought after copper Limited Edition Red Scout Knife geocoin (only 30 sets of these coins were ever made available for purchase and the few that eventually made it onto a well-known online auction site fetched a very pretty penny indeed!). I'm also releasing the third of my new series of circulating geocoins, JamGuys' "Astrolabe" Touring the World Geocoin #3.

FEEDBACK: Please feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions and/or suggestions pertaining to this cache - THANKS!
