Close to highway, plenty of parking, flat level ground. Stealth
required due to high muggle activity.
Located at a Mossyrock Dam viewpoint. Mossyrock Dam, built by the
City of Tacoma, was completed in mid 1968 and first generated
electricity on October 13, 1968. The dam is the tallest dam in
Washington State, standing at 606 feet. It is a concrete arch
design and 1300 feet long. It creates a 23 mile long reservoir
called Riffe Lake after a local pioneer family and the town of
Riffe which lost its life to the rising waters.
Local and state opposition was strong and it took 3 trips to the
U.S. Supreme Court for the final OK to build the dam. Opposition
came from sportsmen's groups and the State Game Department. This
area is now, ironically, considered to be a sportsman's paradise
and this spot, a favorite for anglers trying for landlocked Coho
salmon. You can always tell how the fish are biting by the number
of vehicles parked nearby. This location is also the site of a Blue
Star Mothers Memorial.
