38 degrees south Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ngaambul: As there's been either no response from the cache owner, no cache to find or log to sign, or it's been a number of months since the last owner note. I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace/make available the cache sometime in the near future (next 30 days), just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the current guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it. Should you replace the cache after 30 days has passed please create a new cache listing so it can be reviewed as a new cache.

Geocache Description:

Located in the Eumemmerring Creek Reserve in Doveton/Eumemmerring.

Cache replaced 25th August 2007.

We have replaced the original cache with a 'log only' micro - 35mm film canister. The new logsheet includes a full list of all the previous finder names. Cache co-ordinates have not changed as the new location is merely metres from the original position.

You will now need to bring along your own pen to sign the logsheet.

Additional Hints has been updated.

Please replace the cache as you found it, except of course if you decide it needs to be concealed in its place a bit better.

Regards

***********************************************************

This is the first cache placed by "38 degrees south", so of course we wanted to place it at 38 degrees south!

This line of latitude passes through - in order heading east....

- Eastern Victoria
- Bass Strait
- Tasman Sea
- New Zealand - North Island (passing 125km south of Auckland)
- Pacific Ocean (inc. International Date Line)
- Chile (passing 500km south of Santiago)
- Argentina (passing 375km south of Buenos Aires)
- South Atlantic Ocean (passing 100km south of the main island of Tristan da Cunha - a UK territory island considered the most isolated community in the world!)
- Passing 350km south of the most southern point of Africa
- South Indian Ocean (passing 20km south of Amsterdam Island - a French territory island)
- Passing 315km south of the most south western point of Western Australia.
- South Australia (only just!)
- Western Victoria

Here, you are standing 4,207,277 metres south of the Equator. Historically, the metre was originally defined as one ten-millionth of the then known distance from the Equator to either of the Poles. The Equator-Pole distance has been more accurately measured in modern times and it has been determined that the original metre does in fact does not equal one ten-millionth of the actual modern Equator-Pole distance! The meter is now defined as the distance that light travels in a vacuum in 1/299,792,458th of a second!

Did you know that at this latitude, the speed of the surface of the Earth due to the daily rotation is 1316kmh? - that's 365 metres per second! As compared to the rotational speed at the Equator of 1670kmh (464m/s)

The Antipodal Point of this location (ie, the point on the surface of the Earth directly opposite – or under you) lies in the North Atlantic Ocean, 350km SW of the island of Flores, the most westerly island of the Archipelago of the Azores.

When placing this cache, we noticed that several drainage pits along the main creek bed were missing their lids. Though these hazards are not in close proximity to the cache, we felt it worth noting for those who may be approaching the cache by walking along the grass in or near the creek. Our suggestion to those who may be attempting this cache in fading light or at night is to stick to the gravel path that runs parallel to the creek until the 'search area' becomes apparent, and to keep a look-out!

Hope you enjoy looking for the cache; we certainly enjoyed looking for a place to hide it.
