Geocache Description:

An easy drive-by.

This cache is a re-birthing of the original “Long Sleep Plain” GCKPGA.
The original cache was lost to clean-up work done after a (very rare!) flood through the area.
As I decided to replace the original multi with a traditional cache, I archived the old one and set this one up to give finders of the original cache a chance to spot that there was a new find available.

The cache name is on a rather weather-beaten sign near the given waypoint.

The first explanation I heard for this name was:
This bloke drove from Adelaide to attend a party in Whyalla, intending to stay overnight. When the party was winding up at about 4am, he decided he’d set off on the 400km drive home straight away. However once he’d gone about 25km he realised he was just too tired and pulled over for a sleep. He woke up after sunrise desperate for a pee. That attended to, he drove on to Adelaide. When he got home he soon found out that he was a day later than he expected. So he hadn’t slept for a few hours, but for more than a day!

However, the book “Place Names of South Australia” by Praite and Tolley (1970) just says this name was “possibly given because of the local story of a teamster falling asleep on a journey between Port Augusta and Whyalla”.

Does anyone know of another version?
