Geocache Description:

Singleton Railway Station is on the NSW State Heritage List, dating from 1863 when the Main Northern Line arrived from Newcastle on 7th May. Lines arrived at Penrith and Picton in the Sydney area, and Morpeth around the same time. This railway terminus brought great prosperity to the town, the line was extended further North in 1869.

Significance

Singleton Station is significant as the oldest surviving group of station buildings in the Hunter Valley, displaying fine brickwork and detailing. The scale of the building is large in comparison to the buildings of similar period in the area. The awning is a later addition c. 1910. The pre-cast concrete signal box (c. 1926) being a late addition is typical of its time and came due to upgrading of signalling. This item is listed for being historically, archaeologically and socially rare in NSW.

History
Singleton (1863) was one of the first towns with rail connections outside the Sydney area, and you can see how the network has expanded (and contracted) since then by checking out the pics in the gallery showing rail expansion in NSW and Newcastle area by year. Key to lines status: Green: in use; Red: out of use; Blue: tourist; Grey: lifted. Dotted lines were never completed. Bold lines changed status in the last 5 years.

It appears there used to be a 60' turntable at Singleton, probably dating from the earliest days as the rail terminus for the Main Northern line. It is unclear where it was or if any evidence remains.
