Geocache Description:

This cache was inspired by a desire to expand the caching opportunities along the Mountain Parkway, and is somewhat "akin" to Junior's Last Stop, by SpongeBob CachePants.

The cache is hidden on the site of a former rest area near Campton, Kentucky. For many years, the rest area served as an important, and often necessary, respite from the trek between eastern and central Kentucky.

When weather permitted, it was not uncommon to see travelers relaxing at the site with a picnic lunch or some of the local youth launching themselves into Campton Lake by means of a rope suspended over a rock cliff.

Oddly enough, this was never an officially-designated rest area. Nevertheless, it served its intended purpose well.

As age and the elements took their inevitable toll, it began to fall into a state of disrepair and was eventually closed. As a result, the 75-mile stretch became somewhat "bladder-unfriendly".

Fortunately, the lobbying efforts of Junior Williamson (from Pikeville, KY) paid off and the state constructed a new rest area near the community of Slade in the late-1980's.

The cache container will accomodate a few small trade items. Enjoy your visit to the area, but if you need to use the "facilities", you'll need to travel just a bit further west.

FTF Congrats to moe.joe!!
