Lone Pine Memorial Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

DDTs: We are regretfully archiving our two caches in this area,as it seems that new caches are being deliberately removed - although we have had no request to remove them. This will free up the area, should anyone have a brainwave about how to use it. It's a great and seemingly not well known walk.

Geocache Description:

The battle of Lone Pine began on 6 August 1915. It was named after the single pine tree that grew on the hill that the Turks were defending. Very close to the plaque at the listed coordinates you will see a small pine tree that has been propagated from the one at Lone Pine in Gallipoli - speak kindly to it as you pass, as it seems to be somewhat struggling for survival.

Look at the plaque. The largest number on the km scale is A0. Now, stand with your back to the plaque. You will see B concrete posts in a semi-circle. Go and have a look at them - they identify those who were awarded a Victoria Cross at the battle. Then, look further uphill to the single post, and go and read its plaque. You will learn that this memorial was opened by the governor on 1 Mar CDDE.

The cache is not very far away, at:
43° 0A.6D0, with 077 added to the decimal bit
147° A4.4BA, with 056 added to the decimal bit

Note: You are on commonwealth property when you enter this area and the sign says that all containers must be presented for inspection on request. Dogs must be on a lead. As the signs about trespassing were unclear to us, we rang Fort Direction and they said that there is no problem with public access to the area, but don't attempt to go through the security fence (it's rather obvious).

You will probably need to park at Fort Beach and walk along the beach. Near the beginning of the rock platform you will see a track that leaves the beach. Not far along it you will see signs pointing to the memorial and second beach. You don't need to leave the track to get to the listed coordinates.
