Indian Rock Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Indian Rock is about a 1 mile hike from the designated parking. There are a few hills, about a 325 foot change in elevation all together. There is a nice view of the river valley from near the cache. UPDATE - The thick bush growth has made this a challenge to get to when the leaves are on - hence the high difficulty level.
Indian Rock
The tale goes that when the Indians traveled down the Androscoggin River, they would stop by this location to grind their corn in this peculiar rock. I’m not sure how true that is but it makes for a good story in any case. The cache is located near Indian Rock. Not far away is what as a kid we called Picnic Ledge. There is a clear view up the Androscoggin valley.
Park at the designated spot. Follow the trail (old road) along the east side of the river. The entrance is a bit hidden. There is a gulley to get over that may have water at times. Go upstream to jump across if necessary. Follow the river to meet the old road up the hill. Follow this up until you are about 425 ft from the cache. Look for a tree shaped like a "V" on the right. Soon after the tree you'll find a large rock, also on the right. At the rock, leave the road on the left and you'll see a series of red property line marks. Follow them to the cache. Pictures of the "V" tree and rock can be found in this cache gallery.
