In 1987, a bus loaded with thirty-one school children from
Dallas began crossing a bridge across the Guadalupe River as the
water was beginning to rise. The children had been visiting the
Pot-O-Gold camp near Comfort, TX. As the bus drove across the
bridge, a flash flood enveloped the bus, sending 9 children to
their death. One was never found.
The national news that day showed National Guard and news
helicopters rescuing children and their adult chaperones from the
waters and trees of the basin. For a few days, Comfort was the
focus of national attention.
To the east of the cache location, you can see the ruins of the
original bridge.
As you enjoy the beauty of the area, remember the children and
say a prayer for their families.
Correction to the above, graciously submitted by
Markle on 3/30/2007 (see log entry

| "I'm from Comfort and worked at Hermann Sons Youth Camp next
door for many years. That was a very scary time for all of us, and
actually, the bus wasn't trying to cross the bridge. They were
trying to get out of their gate and turn left to take the high road
out but the water was THAT high!" |
Thanks, Markle!
