Upper Dearne Woodlands Wander Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

CumberWorthCachers: Time to archive this cache. Too many people just short cut from Ruby Dog Walk, both missing the point and cutting across fields they shouldn't be in.

It's had a good run, but time to say goodbye.

Geocache Description:

This cache is placed in the Upper Dearne Woodlands which are located between Birdsedge and Upper Cumberworth. The name “Upper Dearne Woodlands” was coined to describe a collection of four linked but individually named woods.
• Stephen Wood
• Burn Wood
• Green Wood
• New House Wood

The woodlands offer a number of walks on both public rights of way and woodland paths with some interesting wildlife and conservation schemes. Information boards are located at entrances/sites of interest providing detail about the area, its history and recent conservation.

Things to look out for include:
• Wood Ant Colonies;
• Bat Boxes;
• The Victorian Pond;
• Rivers (please be careful of the water).

Pedestrian access can be gained from Upper Cumberworth, either from Barnsley Road or from Park Lane (please do not attempt to drive down Park Lane – it is nothing more than a farmers track/bridle path) and also from Birdsedge, either via Park Lane or the track past Birdsedge Farm. The path from Burn Wood to Park Lane & Park Lane itself give some great views of Upper Cumberworth and Birdsedge villages and out towards Barnsley & Wakefield areas.

Upper Cumberworth has a village pub, The Star (non-food) and a Post Office/Village Store.

The cache is a medium plastic snap-lock container, with:
• Logbook, pen/pencil & sharpener
• Little Blue TB when originally placed
• The other usual bits ‘n’ bats

This is our first cache placed to celebrate Luke’s 9th birthday. The nearby path is very popular with dog walkers, so care will be needed to avoid being discovered by muggles. Please re-hide carefully from view.

The cache has been relocated from its original site, and should help avoid muggles springing suprises on you (a little). You need to be in the woods to locate the cache. IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO DO THIS ONE AS A DETOUR FROM RUBY DOG WALK - BEST TO APPROACH FROM RDW4
