Geocache Description:

The Tree Trail is a circular walk of a little over 3.5 miles, starting from the village of Sevenoaks Weald.
It offers a hexad of caches along the way, each linked in some way to an interest of mine… trees.

The series was set out numerically but can be tackled from either direction and though the caches are linked by subject, each can be sought individually.

The trail mostly follows public footpaths, bridle and byways but there are points where roads must be crossed or followed for a short distance. Take care at these locations. OS Explorer Map, sheet 147 would prove useful. When set in mid Feb, the ground conditions at some points were very wet.

Parking can be found in the village with the Memorial Hall car park, despite the sign, usually being a safe bet. N51 14 171 E000 11 213

Onto the cache #1...

Corylus avellana; Hazel or Cobnut is a large shrub or small many stemmed tree native to Britain. It is often grown for its edible nuts and as hedging. Coppicing produces thin flexible rods, useful for many applications, including woven fencing (hurdles), beanpoles and for those with the know-how, divining rods.

Following a byway which runs South from the village, look West at waypoint N51 13.989 E000 11.207 and you will see Long Barn, thought to date in part from the mid C14. It was home of Harold Nicholson and Vita Sackville West who in 1915 began work on a formal garden. Further developments were made by Edwin Lutyens in 1925. Vita grew up at nearby Knole and was later the driving force behind the world famous gardens at Sissinghurst.

William Caxton, of printing press fame is also believed to have been born at Long Barn.

The cache is on a small path which runs parallel to the byway, a few metres to the East.
