Pit-Stop Series:N59 Loch Bo Finne (Lough Bofin) Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

The Quiet Man: Was on a maintenance tour early this morning and was a bit anxious to see what the problem was with all the no finds. I figured it out on the journey long before I got there. The N59 is under going a road resurfacing and my little cache seems to have bitten the bullet :( Workmen have chopped down all the trees and scrubs on the grass verge to widen the road, and the whole area is flattened. So unfortunately I will have to archive this one. Thanks to all that took the time out of their journeys to find this in the past and hope you all enjoyed the view of the Crannog on the lake.

Geocache Description:

The cache takes in the view of a possible lake dwelling called a crannog. West of Galway, in particular Connemara, the lakes are dotted with them. Beyond the island on the opposite shore you might be able to make out a road that follows along the lake, this now road was actually part of the dismantled Galway to Clifden railway line.
You can just imagine the view from the carriage as it winds and puffs its way along to it’s final destination. Behind you can be seen Knockbrack and the smaller Cnoc Leitir Feoir.

A crannog was also a place of refugee in times of attack. In those times, cattle raids were the crime of the time, as cattle were the wealth of the country, the more you had the higher your standing in society was, which lead to cattle raiding. A clue that this might be a crannog, and was used as a cattle refugee could be in the name of the lake.
Lough Bofin, not much to get from that, but in Irish, Loch Bo Finne you get a lot more.

Loch = Lake.Bo = Cow. Finne = White Lake of the white cow.

A more recognisable name as above would be Inishbofin or Inis Bofin
Island of the white cow.

So what’s so special about a white cow? Well it could be considered a sacred symbol, white being pure. But my own opinion is that it was more likely a white Bull, which was considered very valuable to the tribe and very collectable by another. Thus the island you see would have been used to hide it from prying eyes.

The cache is hidden under an old roof ridge tile, which is cover in grass.PLEASE!!!! Put it back the way you found it.
