V stredu 6.11. 2002 doslo vo vecernych hodinach ku zrazke dvoch stihacich lietadiel MiG-29 Armady Slovenskej republiky. Obe lietadla, ktore patrili 1. letke z 1. LZ "genmjr. Otta Smika" Sliac sa zrazili o 20:40 hod. pocas cvicneho letu priblizne v 4-kilometrovej vyske. Trosky lietadiel dopadli v oblasti obce Hnilcik, asi 12km od Spisskej Novej Vsi.
Pilot prveho lietadla, 39-rocny inspektor lietania na 1. LZ Sliac, maj. Martin Hronec sa nastastie stihol katapultovat a zachranari ho nasli este pred polnocou. Okamzite bol prevezeny na osetrenie do Vojenskej nemocnice v Kosiciach, kde sa podrobil potrebnym vysetreniam. Napriek az 20-nasobnemu pretazeniu, ktoremu je pilot vystaveny pocas katapultaze, maj. Martin Hronec neutrpel ziadne zlomeniny a okrem niekolkych odrenin ani ine vaznejsie zranenia.
Pilot druheho lietadla, 39-rocny velitel prveho roja 1.letky na 1. LZ Sliac, maj. Marian Katuska sa bohuzial nekatapultoval a zahynul priamo v kabine svojho stroja. Jeho telo bolo najdene vo stvrtok rano. Marian Kartuska bol zenaty a mal dve deti.
Tato lahko dostupna keska nedaleko pamatnika, pripominajuceho tuto havariu, nech je prejavom ucty voci obeti, pozostalym a vsetkym, ktorych sa tato tragedia dotkla.

On Wednesday evening, November 6th 2002, two fighters MiG-29 of Slovak Army had collide. The airplanes did belong to The Air-base of genmjr. Otto Smik in Sliac, Slovakia and crashed during training flight near Spisska Nova Ves, Slovakia at 8:40pm in alt. 4 km (approx. 13000ft.).
The pilot of first plane, maj. Martin Hronec catched to eject from the plane and was found by rescuers till midnight. Immediately he was transported to the hospital, were he was examined. Due to heavy G-forces during ejection (20G), he didn’t suffer any fracture or other serious injuries.
Unfortunatelly, the pilot of second plane, maj. Marian Kartuska didn’t eject and he died directly in his plane. His body was found on Thursday morning. Marian Kartuska was married and had two children.
Placing this easy accessible cache near memorial, which is remaining this accident, is a manifest of respect to the victim, remainders and all, who were touched by this tragedy.
