Geocache Description:

Located in Canmore Alberta on a walking path with no altitude gain. Dogs are allowed on the path but must be on a leash.

It's hard to not think about the mountains when you're in Canmore. The town is full of skiers, mountain bikers, hikers, photographers, nature lovers...and now geocachers! There is so much to do here that you would think that this was the reason the town existed in the first place.

All of these things were factors in the growth of the town but Canmore was much different before the 1988 Olympic games. There was no Nordic Centre, a few less golf courses and it would be pretty hard to find a huge mountain chalet. Also the number of people who worked for Canmore Mines Ltd probably outnumbered those who worked at the ski hills. After 90 years of continuous extraction the final mine closed in 1979 but the mines will always be a part of the towns history. Even though there is closer parking to the cache, if you park at the recommended location you can walk part of the Trans Canada trail along the bow river and see the past. Make sure to cross the bridge at N51 04.825 W115 21.910. On the way you WILL see the black coal slag from the mine, mine carts and parts, the mine entrance and the lamphouse. You MAY see people flyfishing in the bow, helicopters heading off on tours, elk, deer and other wildlife. The walk is 4 kms round trip and should take about 2-3 hours...less if you mountain bike it. You know you're getting close when you start to smell the sulphur spring!

The cache container is about the same size as a kleenex box.
