The Big Wheel is a turbine wheel used by BKK (Bergen Power Company) starting in 1956.
The cache is nearby.
The Big Wheel will easily be seen as you drive past Matre on E39. The dimensions of the wheel are rather impressive. Three of the generators in the Matre Power Station were driven by the Pelton wheel. There were two Pelton wheels on each generator. The Pelton wheel on the lawn produced power for nearly 10 years. In this time the generator has delivered about 5 billion kilowatt-hours of power. This corresponds to the power consumption of about 300,000 homes.
Matre was the base for the active and effective resistance group 'Bjørn Vest' during World War 2. There is a museum about this in Matre. The museum is open on weekends from April to Sepember, and week days through July and August.
The cache is in a wall very close to the turbine wheel. Be sure the rock covering the cache will stay in place when you leave.
