Geocache Description:

The "Alligator" Mound

The “Alligator” Mound is one of the two effigy mounds in Ohio. An effigy mound is a raised pile of soil and/or rock in the shape of an animal. One of the most famous is Great Serpent Mound; Ohio’s other effigy mound, located in Adams County, Ohio. The exact reason for their construction is not know but it is believed that they were for religious purposes. Archaeologist and the general public still debate over the kind of animal that is represented, many claim it is an opossum, or panther, or mystical cryptozological creature. What do you think? It really doesn't look like an alligator does it?

Nearby are the Newark Earthworks which were built by the Hopewell culture between 100 B.C. and A.D. 400. Archaeologists are uncertain who built Alligator Mound but estimate that it is of Hopewell construction. Other than their spectacular earthen monumental architecture, the Hopewell culture is best known for its extensive trade network amongst other communities. This is evident because of the exotic (non-local) artifacts found in the Hopewell areas. Also it is believed that the Hopewell culture relied on a predominance of agricultural subsistence rather than a hunting and gathering subsistence strategy.
