From the Rhinelander Daily News, Best Years Section, April 29, 2007:

McNaughton's early roots were actually northwest of where it is now. Dougall W. McNaughton, formerly of Big Rapids, Mich., ran a sawmill on McNaughton Lake, and it was this area that was known in 1890 as McNaughton. In 1891, a Rhinelander newspaper reported that, in addition to the sawmill on the lake, the thirty-acre clearing also contained a general store, about forty-five tenement houses, and a small school house.
