Geocache Description:

This Cache has been placed above Wild Church Bottom in the North West end of Ringwood Forest at Verwood. From parking co-ords the woodland walk is just over 1k (each way).Thr route is buggy friendly as far as gravel track junction just north of cache if following suggested route given in parking paragraph .A detour to Stepen's Stone is not buggy friendly .

The Stone
Stephen's Stone is a solid block of stone. It is said to measure 6m x 3m x 3m ... very big stone for the locality ! In 1220 Stephen's Stone was recorded as "Le Horestone" and was a boundary point in the area. Legend has it that beneath the stone is a Golden Cask.
The stone is a short excursion from the gravel track near the cache site.
Forestry Commission "Stephens Stone" signs guide the way.
The access path to the stone becomes narrow and can be very wet underfoot, though suitable shod ,we think the excursion worthwhile for the curiously minded .

Cache placed with the knowledge of the F.C. and in accordance with Forestry Commission New Forest and East Dorset GAGB Permissions Agreement. link to the agreement
N.B. as part of this agreement it is not permitted to seek this cache during the hours of darkness.
Please do not leave any edible items

Please note the final approach down the short section of grass ride to this cache that was easy access when cache placed 4.5 years ago is now getting invaded by gorse growth . It is still just navigable ,but shorts not advised . We may have to consider this caches days/months to be numbered. We looked today for an alternative hiding place ,but nothing did we find.(July 2011)

Suggested parking co-ords are at the end of St Stephens Lane at N 50 52.919 W001 52.058.
St Stephen's Lane is a residential road, with free roadside parking, located off the main Ringwood to Verwood road, and has direct access to footpaths through the Forest. From there it is possible ,if you start by following the gravel track on the left ,to follow firm gravel tracks to within a stones throw distance of the cache location. Then it is just the Stones throw distance down a wide grassy path to the cache a couple of feet from the path edge.

Note .Some distance along the grassy path below the cache site the grassy path becomes quite marshy. We DO NOT ADVISE walking to or from the cache by that route!

Cache is a 2.4litre klip and lock plastic container .
Please leave container fully covered .
Please retrieve cache from the rear to avoid leaving tell tale footprints in front of cache location.

28th September 2012 this cache willl be archived very soon (but not today or day after) to make way for a new cache of ours.Permission granted but awaiting publication.
