Les Blanches Banques is Jersey’s last remaining sand dune system.
Measuring approximately 100 hectares, it is a site of international ecological importance due to the exceptionally high floral diversity and rarity of the habitat, and the many species of other animals that use the area as a refuge.
The site is exceptionally diverse, supporting over 450 plant species, 16 of which are recorded in the British Red Data Book, the national list of rare or endangered plants, including Nottingham catchfly, purple vipers bugloss, sea holly, sea-stock, dwarf pansy, green winged and early purple orchids and the rare, lizard orchid.
It is also an important area for green lizards, grass snakes, bank voles, wood mice and shrews, as well as a sizeable community of rabbits which graze the area intensively. Toads also breed in the seasonal ponds. Birds such as sand martins, wheatears, skylarks and stonechats can also be seen on the sand dunes, all of which are becoming rare in the Island. Rare invertebrates such as the blue winged grasshopper and bloody nosed beetle can be found here, as well as butterflies such as red admirals, small tortoiseshells, commas and common blues, which can often be seen in abundance on a hot summer’s day.
As well as the natural beauty of the site you’ll also find Mehirs or standing stones here which are monuments to Jersey’s early settlers, plus remnants of a prisoner of war camp. This was built during the Great War (1914-1918) to house German prisoners. The compound was about 280m square with guard buildings set outside the 3m high barbed wire perimeter fence. By 1917 the camp held over 1,500 prisoners. The camp was finally closed in October 1919. You’ll also find WWII fortifications dotted around the area showing our latest period of history.
Parking for the cache can be found in several other car parks around the site if you’d prefer a different starting location to the one recommended or you could take the 12a bus route to St Ouens Bay.
The cache is a 3lt Tupperware container with a log book and various trade items.
