Located at Achmelvich near Lochinver.
This cache is located near the small settlement of Achmelvich.
Achmelvich is located approximately 3 miles north west of Lochinver in a beautiful setting, this is the place to come and relax. Achmelvich can be reached by two routes, the first is the footpath which leads from Baddidarach located across the bay from the centre of lochinver or if you have a ca take the road from lochinver, the road is a rather windy and narrow single track road, so please take care and take it gently; this is not the place to rush.
The main feature of achmelvich are the lovely sandy beaches, which on a fine sunny day have to be one of the best places I can think of, however even if the sun is not behaving the beach and surrounding area are still one fine area to visit.
Apart from the main beach there are the following other “attractions”.
Machair; this is one of the rarest type of habitat in europe, the majority is found on the outer isles but there is a nice example of this at achmelvich, at the right time of year the land between the carpark and the beach will be covered in a blanket of flowers, a real treat.
Otters; if you are lucky you may well see signs of otters, or the actual article if really lucky in the area of Loch Roe.
And finally the castle.
Castle? I hear you say while peering at the map, I see no castle; well this is no ordinary castle. It is neither ancient or made of stone, rather it is only about 60 years old and made of concrete and quite possibly has to be the smallest habitable castle in the world.
The story goes that in about 1950 a Architectural student came up to achmelvich for the summer where he practiced his trade by designing and building this concrete castle. Once completed he only used it for a couple of days and then abandoned it, leaving behind a rather unique feature on the landscape.
After arriving at the carpark walk out on to the beach then along to the campsite, Go through the gate into the campsite and then follow the fence up the hill and exit the campsite using the gate at the back, then walk out over the headland towards the cache and castle. It is easy walking and no special footwear is required.
The cache is located on the hilside to the north of the castle.
