Geocache Description:

FTF HONORS GO TO 69beetle!!

A very interesting piece of Athenian and Civil War history. The above coordinates take you to the water wheel with a plaque. The information you will need to continue is contained on the plaque.

The first industry along the North Oconee River in Athens was a sawmill and gristmill run by Daniel Easley. The water provided the power to saw wood, cut corn and wheat into grist, which was then produced into flour. Francis and Ferdinand Cook bought the grist and sawmill from Easley and expanded it with a brick building. It became known as the Cook & Brother Confederate Armory. Their plan was to manufacture rifles, carbines, bayonets and horseshoes. The guns were assembled by hand and the Armory produced up to 600 weapons a month. The weapons produced in the water-powered Armory were heralded as some of the finest in the South. The final coordinates to the cache are: N 33° 57.406 W 083° 21. A OR B OR C. Cook & Brother purchased property at the junction of Trail Creek and North Oconee River and built the armory which produced Enfield model rifles for the Confederate Army. In what year did the Plaque say this was done? A = 1860 coordinates = 901, B = 1864 coordinates = 991, C = 1862 coordinates = 964 The correct answer will complete the above coordinates and lead you to the cache. We hope everyone enjoys this as much as we did learning about a part of Athens history. If you look across the street you will see the Armory is still there. P.S. Bring your own pen and there is now room for trinkets. Be sure to check out our other N.O.R.G. caches N.O.R.G. Railroad Heritage and N.O.R.G. Walk.
