Geocache Description:

This is the State Wide meeting of the SCGA for March.
The 2006 SCGA “Best of” Cache Winners will be announced.

Due to the recent passing of Jon Barry of Jon&Miki, a special tribute will be set up to memorialize him. For more details visit the SCGA website. Please make every effort to make this event to honor the memory of Jon and support Miki in her time of sorrow and grief.

The March 17th SCGA Statewide Meeting will be held at the Gazebo in Harbison State Forest. Foremost among the Agenda Topics will be the Presentation of the SCGA “Best” Cache Awards. The meeting will start at Noon (to allow travel time for those from around the State) and last till 3 pm. You know how GeoCachers are when they get together, so we have the Gazebo until at least four pm. This will be a potluck lunch so please make a note of what you plan to bring.

For those of you with other scheduled obligations that day, please note that you are more then welcome to come and go as you please. This will be a fun event to meet fellow Cachers from all over the state. As always, raffle prizes, TBs, coins, etc...are welcome. There are more than ten active caches in Harbison State Forest. There are at least 50 active caches within 5 miles (on the same side of the Broad River).

Harbison State Forest is over 2,000-acres of wooded forest land just 9 miles from downtown Columbia, located along the Broad River. As the largest Urban Green Space in the SE USA, it features over 16 miles of trails for hiking and bicycling, picnic shelters, and special forestry education programs. View the trail guide map here. Keep your eyes and ears open for bicyclists. It is much easier to step aside than to conduct field research into the laws of mass, momentum, and inertia.

There's a $2 parking permit fee which can be paid at most of the marked parking areas. Bicyclists will also need to pay a Trail Use fee. The gates are usually locked after 4:30 pm at this time of the year. It's OK to be in the forest until sunset, but if you expect to be in the park after hours, be sure to park your car outside the gates to avoid the parking fine. Check the posted signs for seasonal variations to the gate schedule. They have not yet determined what effect the early Daylight Savings Time will have on the gate schedule.

You may contact the Harbison State Forest Office at (803)896-8890 with any questions or if you need any assistance while in the forest.

In case of EXTREME WEATHER, the Forest management may close the gates. Our contingency plan will be to meet at one of the shelters at Seven Oaks Park, preferably the Rotary Shelter at the front of the park. For location reference, this is the park with GCV9TC (Among the Seven Oaks) and GCV9Y5 (Home Run).
