Geocache Description:

A visit to a nature reserve followed by a fairly strenuous walk to the cache site.

Coed y Bwl nature reserve in Castle upon Alun is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) which is managed by the Wildlife Trust for South and West Wales. It is a little known haven of peace and tranquility, just 6 acres in total. In spring time it is carpeted by hundreds of wild daffodils. This is an unusual and beautiful sight.
Later in the spring it has such flowers as Wood Anemones, Dog Violets, Dog's Mercury, Bluebells and the uncommon Star of Bethlehem. The wood is also home to many insect species and some rare invertebrates which provide food for bird species such as Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Tree Creeper, Titmice, Goldcrest and Wren. Birds of prey include Sparrowhawk, Tawny Owl, Kestrel, Buzzard and visiting Peregrine Falcon. Summer visitors include Blackcap, Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler.
The main cache is hidden some distance from Coed y Bwl wood.
You will need to visit the wood in order to take information from the commemorative stone which is sited near the entrance to the wood to work out the coordinates for the main cache. Please take some time to explore this lovely wood and enjoy the surroundings.
Parking is available at the given coordinates. Alternative parking is available a short distance away just past the railway bridge.
N.B.It is best to approach from the East as there is a ford at Castle upon Alun which, if the river is high, may be too deep for some cars.
