Geocache Description:

"Higgins"

In 1887, the first train arrived and the post office in Higgins, Texas was opened. Higgins was named for G. H. Higgins, a wealthy railroad stockholder. Higgins was struck by the "Woodward", Oklahoma tornado on April 9, 1947 and an estimated 45 people were killed and another 140 injured. Will Rogers, one of America's best loved humorists, was born in Oklahoma in 1898. When threatened with discipline for pranks, Will left school and came to Higgins, Texas. Here he became a cowboy, learning to rope and ride, on the Little Robe Ranch located near Higgins. In 1902, his trick riding and roping landed him a job in a Wild West show. Will Rogers died in an airplane crash along with Wiley Post in 1935.
