Geocache Description:

Maungatautari Mountain-reasonably easy access, steep stair climb at end. Note there is now an $18 Entrance fee to the enclosure

MAUNGATAUTARI ECOLOGICAL ISLAND TRUST This walk is easily accessible from the end of Tari Rd. _______________________________________________________________ This is a cache to commemorate the life of our horse Star who was born on the slopes of this mountain in October 1974. Star was still active and enjoying life up to the age of 32 years until Mother's Day 13 May 2007 when sadly we had to have her put down due to old age. She had been part of of my partner Elaine's family for 25 years. Rest In Peace Dear Old Friend ____________________________________________________________ The feature of this location is the award-winning 16 Meter Viewing tower which was completed in October 2006 manually by volunteers without the aid of vehicles, cranes or power tools. The cantilevered spiral staircase, with 7 viewing platforms, takes you right up into the canopy of the forest. There is even a nice table and chair at the top to relax. One unusual feature is the gentle movement of the tower, which is intentional and this is reminiscent of the treetops swaying in the breeze around you. The tower will give visitors to Maungatautari a close up view of the 800 year old rata trees, the forest canopy trees, their epiphytes, and the birdlife. The quality of the forest in this area is already responding remarkably well to the last year’s pest eradication within the southern enclosure. The design of the structure has been prepared by engineer/volunteer Roger Williams who is also supervising construction by both volunteers and expert subcontractors. Posing for photographs recently against one of the rata, world renowned conservationist, David Bellamy, remarked it was a magical site and he was delighted by the idea of getting visitors up amongst the forest canopy. Trust chief executive Jim Mylchreest said the building of the tower was just another example of how the community had come together to make Maungatautari a great place to visit. This is on the Rata Track which is a 2.2 Km loop track if you wish to carry on.
