Could this be the highest cache in South Yorkshire? Well to be honest it’s probably not but it’s a close second. The cache is placed on Howden Edge overlooking the Upper Derwent valley.
I was hoping to place the cache in a particular spot further south making it the highest cache in South Yorkshire but chose not to do due to its proximity to grouse butts. This is the third cache placed on or around Howden Edge but in my opinion this one has the best views of them all (but I would say that wouldn’t I?). The recommended route for this cache is to park at the Fairholmes car park at Derwent Dam and then walk along the eastern shore of Derwent Reservoir to Howden Reservoir and then cut up the well marked, but often boggy in places, track via Nether Hey to Howden Edge. There are other routes to the ‘Edge’ including an extension of the above route by walking a little further along Howden Reservoir, taking in the ‘Busted Dam’ cache before turning right up Howden Clough taking in the ‘Fourth Upper Derwent Reservoir’ cache before striking up the paths, either direct to Margery Hill or cutting up Howden Clough to the right and joining the track from Nether Hey. Another alternative would be to walk up from Upper Midhope. Whatever route you chose enjoy the walk and the caches you may wish to visit. There is excellent GPS reception and therefore no clues are attached but a spoiler photograph can be included if necessary. The cache box is a 1 litre tupperware style box covered in cammo tape containing cache card, FTF card, log book, pencil, sharpener and assorted goodies including a TB and a Geocoin.
