Deception Island
The climax of every journey to the Antactic Peninsula is the visit to Deception Island.
Through Neptune's bellows one can drive by ship into the caldera of the gigantic volcano.
Now a horseshoe-shaped flooded caldera, the island measures 13 x 14 km and is accessed through Neptunes Bellows. Deception is an active, still young volcano. It is not older than 10,000 years. On the fringe of the 190m deep internal crater lake there are hot springs. In the south and east the mountains are over 500m high. Blackened terminuses glide to the valley. Please be aware it is classified as a restless caldera with a significant volcanic risk.
Der Höhepunkt jeder Reise zur Antarktischen Halbinsel ist der Besuch von Deception Island.
Durch Neptuns Blasebalg kann man mit dem Schiff in die Caldera des riesigen Vulkans hineinfahren. Wie ein Hufeisen liegt die 13 x 14 km messende Insel in der Bransfieldstrasse. Deception ist ein aktiver, noch junger Vulkan. Er ist nicht älter als 2 Mio. Jahre. Am Rande des 190m tiefen inneren Kratersees gibt es heisse Quellen. Im Süden und Osten sind die Berge über 500m hoch. Geschwärzte Gletscherzungen gleiten zu Tal.
Telefon Bay
An English collier gave her the name of the bay, that ran 1908 due to. In 1967 and 1970 powerful eruptions occurred here. In the bay a new island which later again was united with the crater arose.
Den Namen der Bucht hat ihr ein englischer Kohlefrachter gegeben, der 1908 auf Grund lief. 1967 und 1970 fanden hier mächtige Vulkanausbrüche statt. In der Bucht entstand eine neue Insel, die später wieder mit dem Kraterrund vereint wurde.
Pendulum Cove
The bay combines Antarctic bathing-joys. In 1829, geophysical pendulum measurements were carried out here. Therefore the Pendulum Bay received its name. The remains of the Chilean station Pedro Aguirre Cerda are still visible. Since the eruptions of 1967 and 1970, hot springs outcrop at the shore and Pendulum Cove changed to a bathing-bay. Today, the floor of Port Foster is rising rapidly in geological terms, and there are areas of long term geothermal activity.
Die Bucht verbindet antarktische Badefreuden. 1829 wurden hier geophysikalische Pendelmessungen durchgeführt. Daher erhielt die Pendelbucht ihren Namen. Zu erkennen sind noch die Reste der chilenischen Station Pedro Aguirre Cerda. Seit den Vulkanausbrüchen 1967 und 1970 treten am Ufer heisse Quellen aus und verwandeln Pendulum Cove eine Badebucht.
Whalers Bay
The whale catcher bay accommodated from 1911 to 1931 the most southern Trankocherei of the world. Fishing boats brought the whales into the bay. One motor boat cooked the fat in stoves to obtain the oil. The rest of the whale would lie rotting. Up to 6000 whale carcasses floated in part in the bay. As many things on the island the remains of the eruptions were buried also here.
Die Walfängerbucht beherbergte von 1911 - 1931 die südlichste Trankocherei der Welt. Fangschiffe brachten die Wale in die Bucht. Den fetthaltigen Blubber kochte man in Öfen zu Tran. Den Rest des Wales lies man verrotten. Bis zu 6000 Walkadaver trieben teilweise in der Bucht. Wie vieles auf der Insel wurden auch hier die Reste von den Vulkanausbrüchen begraben.
