Geocache Description:

A decon can with log book and room for small trade items. This cache was placed in anticipation of the NY Capital Region Geocachers Picnic to be held at Chery Plain SP on September 15th and 16th.

A special feature of Cherry Plain SP is a Charcoal Kiln Site, which may be found by hiking a trail that begins at the southern corner of the main parking lot.  Charcoal production was a major occupation here on the Rensselaer Plateau over 100 years ago.  The charcoal was used to supply the industrial furnaces in the Troy area including the glass factories at Glass lake. Most charcoal was burned in mounds created from 30- to 40- foot diameter stacks of carefully placed vertical slabs of hardwood, leaving a tube-like space in the middle to serve as a chimney. These mounds were covered with sod and carefully burned over a one- to two-week period under the watchful eye of constantly vigilant colliers, who lived in the woods for weeks at a time.

By the mid-nineteenth century some charcoal operations made use of large often circular (and occasionally conical) kilns of brick, stone, and/or masonry construction. These larger operations supplied massive quantities of charcoal. Into the Twentieth Century, charcoal was still burned to be used as a clean heating fuel, and for outdoor cooking. Currently the only extant colliers consist of a very few individuals determined to preserve their nearly-lost art. Low circular mounds (or "bottoms") found in forests and the remains of a few larger kilns are all that remains to be seen today.
