I can't actually tell you that much about this location! It does
look like a dam to create a pool and then a hook in the dam wall to
guide the water around the edge. It is possible this was used to
create a pool for livestock especially as there appears to be the
remains of an old hafod nearby. However, the dam seems fairly well
built (despite its middle having been removed) so I think it is
most likely to be a dam to have created a head of water to power
some sort of mill further down the valley.
There are a number of possible starting points to go and find
this cache, listed below
Nant Gwynant
Park on the A498 at N53 03.280 W4 00.302 and follow the
bridleway up over the hill. Remember to get
GC12RHC - Chuffing Hill en route. The walk to the cache from
this starting location is about 2.4Km long.
Dolwyddelan side of the valley
Park at the end of the country lane, past Roman Bridge train
station, at N53 02.546 W3 56.748. Follow the bridleway through the
farmyard and up over the hill. The walk to the cache from this
valley is also about 2.4Km long.
Or make a day of it with some big mountain walking...
Parking in the village centre of Dolwyddelan, I personally would
recommend a long day and doing some decent memorable caches. We
followed this route on the day of setting the cache. Including
caching, I would allow 8 hours - though of course you could adjust
your schedule / itinerary.
GC189KM - Lookout Hill, then
GC11PHV - Twll Benja is on the Map,
GCC3D7 - Caldera,
GCTNFV - Moel Siabod,
GC11HFJ - Carnedd y Cribiau, then do this cache and then walk
along the forestry footpath, down towards the Ffridd property at
the start of the Lledr valley, then walk along the BOAT (By Way
Open to All Traffic), grab
GCDD77 - Castle Lake and then you are back in the village
centre! Go and freshen up if you're staying in the area then grab a
beverage at the pub! You'll have earnt it!
Or go completely nuts and just do your own
thing!
Do your own thing on the footbridge a little down from the
cache, Tynymynydd certainly
did!
