and is part of . . . . .

The Nene Way Series

started by Cassie's Crusaders

The Nene Way footpath starts at Badby on the western borders of Northamptonshire. It meanders along the river and takes you through small villages and towns following the Nene Valley for 110 miles. It passes through Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire before joining The Wash near Sutton Bridge. The route was opened with the support of the Countryside Commission in the late 1980's.
Nene Way

This is a multi cache in the historical village of Fotheringhay. It takes you on a walk from the church to the castle site collecting information to help you find the final cache location. Total distance approx. 1.25 miles.

Fotheringhay Church can be seen for miles around and has an unusual octagonal lantern tower. The Church was once twice the size it is now and evidence of bricked in arches can be seen on the end wall.

Fotheringhay Castle was started about 1100 and demolished in 1635. The castle has had royal connections from Norman times, including the birth of Richard III in 1452, through to a visit from Queen Mary in the 1930's. Mary Queen of Scots was brought to Fotheringhay Castle and stood trial in the Great Hall in October 1586. She was beheaded on February 8th 1587 - it took three strokes of the executioners axe to complete the task! After the castle fell into disrepair stone was taken and used in building cottages and walls around the village. The wooden staircase from the Great Hall was used in the Talbot Hotel, Oundle, where it can be seen today. All that remains is the castle motte, ditches and a block of wall near the river.

This is a very quiet village so please park considerately (near the church wall is best). The castle site is next to the river so please keep an eye on small children. Dogs must be kept on leads in the castle grounds. Please enter and leave the castle site by the same gate before heading off for the final hunt. The cache location is fairly open and visible from a distance so stealth is required. Please pack the cache away so it can't be seen. Have fun.

The above co-ordinates are for parking on the village street.
