This is a real drive-in cache, easiest
accessible driving from Sotra towards Bergen, but also accessible
coming the other way.
If you have to pay a tax for driving with
studded tires you can do this here, if not you now still have a
reason for stopping here.
In the 1950ies there was a huge interest for
building a bridge between the island of Sotra and the
mainland.
"Sotrabroen" was constructed in the years between 1969 and 1971,
and is a suspension bridge that connects the island "Litlesotra"
with the mainland in Hordaland.
The
1236 meter long bridge has a main lenght of 468 meters and was the
longest bridge in Norway at the time is was buildt.
23,5
millions NOK of the total cost of 40 millions NOK is covered by
toll fees. The collection of toll money ended in 1983.
"Sotrabroen" is buildt to improve the connection between the
municipals Bergen, Sund and Fjell.
The
bridge also improved the time spendt travelling for commuters from
the small islands in the area. The opening also created
increased growth for the industry and commerce, and in the
years after the opening several new places of work was esablished
at Sotra.
In
2005 the traffic over the bridge had increased to approx. 25 000
cars every 24 hours, and the great traffic often causes long queues
over the bridge.
The
planning of a new bridge has already started. One of the options is
a new 4-field bridge besides todays bridge.
