High Rail celebrates the building of
railways in Victorian Wensleydale. A line from Northallerton to
Leyburn and Hawes was built by the North Eastern Railway, while the
Midland Railway Company built a branch line from Garsdale on the
Settle-Carlisle line through to Hawes. These lines terminated at a
joint station in Hawes and were completed in 1878. The railways
allowed a wide range of goods to be transported to markets in the
north east and also helped many new industries in the Dale to
expand and flourish.

railways in the area, visit our archaeology website, www.outofoblivion.org.uk
Muggle alert: The cache is located close to the roadside and
there is also the chance of being seen by children jumping off the
viaduct at regular intervals (abseiling!) so take particular care
not to be seen hiding the cache.
This cache can be included with three of the others to make a
good circular walk of about 7 miles, starting at Hawes National
Park car park (charge). If you plan to do this walk with a dog,
please note that there are some very narrow squeeze stiles along
the way. It may be necessary for you to lift your four legged
friend over them!
There is a regular bus service to Hawes.
The four caches in the correct order for the walk are:
Hawes Highways (multi-cache)
West Cam
High Rail
The Black Stuff
The fifth cache in this series is
High Cam . This can be visited on a steep there-and-back walk
from Hawes of about 6.5 miles.
The Yorkshire Dales National Park Centres at Malham,
Grassington, Hawes and Aysgarth Falls have computers with internet
access that you can use free of charge to check waypoints. The
Centre in Reeth also has this facility but there is a small charge
of £1 for 20 minutes. At Grassington, Malham and Aysgarth Falls you
can also connect and download waypoints for our caches to your
Magellan and Garmin devices. See the
National Park Authority's website for the opening times of the
Centres.
