Geocache Description:

Cache is a magnetic key holder located at a turn off spot as you begin to ascend the Willow Creek Grade. Please be careful with children as the cache is located next to busy Highway 12.

"At the foot of the Willow Creek hill there was a school called New Hope. Church services were held in the schoolhouse on Sundays. It was the United Brethren Rural Church. The school and church started in 1884. Along with the school building, there was a service station which was called, "The Last Chance", meaning it was the last chance on the highway to get gas and water before climbing the steep Willow Creek grade. It was then a gravel road and the cars, at that time, travelled slow. The last person to operate the station was Leo Peterson and his wife. They also lived at the station. A few items of food and other notions were kept on hand for sale. New Hope went out of business at the start of World War II, long after the school was gone." (Early Columbia County by Wilma Fletcher) The school and service station were near an old shed which remains standing and is used periodically. You can see it on the west side of the road before ascending the grade.

At the base of the Willow Creek grade on the east side is the Willow Creek and the gravel road associated with it. The creek and the road go that direction. The creek that parallels the Willow Creek grade in the ravine next to it is actually Spring Creek, although you can't see it from the highway.

Please bring your own writing utensil as there wasn't any room for one.

There is a small FTF prize, otherwise just the log.
