Waterbird Rapids is a hidden pocket of abundant waterfowl and other waterbirds close to the center of urban Menasha.
At this cache site, the waters of the Fox River remain open year-round due to the effect of the currents below the Menasha dam and warm water discharges from paper companies and other facilities. You will be able to spot large populations of Canada Geese and Mallard ducks, as well as American Mergansers and Bluebills in the winter months. Bald Eagles are common sightings here, and pelicans, seagulls, and cormorants, especially in the summer. During the time of cache placement, as many as eight Bald Eagles circled above or perched on trees on the small island nearby in the mouth of the river during one visit.
In 2018, a footbridge was completed spanning this branch of the Fox, so it's not as quiet here, where once an old giant cottonwood held the cache container at an isolated dead end. So, there's a new experience walking out over the light rapids, where you still see waterbirds of many kinds, and can even get closer. but need to be more aware of others present when you find and return the cache.
This cache was initially placed to help add some winter-friendly caches to our search options. Enjoy the bird watching at this location, particularly in the winter months.
