Geocache Description:

How much do you know about Kelvin Grove's heritage? This puzzle multi-cache will require a little research.

Please note the above coordinates are not the coordinates of the cache, just an indication of the area of Brisbane the cache is hidden in.

This is the fifth and final cache in a series of heritage listed places in Kelvin Grove.

This cache will require you to visit an interesting looking heritage-listed building, but the cache is not at the site. You will need to do some research before you can find the cache itself (I told you there would be a test). You can read more about this heritage location at EPA Qld's website: AMA House.

The house is a good example of architecture influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and adapted to tropical climate. AMA House has considerable aesthetic value, the external massing, materials and detailing which combine to create a picturesque quality. The construction technique, including the steel members used in the framing and the granite cladding is unusual for a house of the 1910s. The house provides early evidence of internal open planning.

As well as AMA House, four other caches have been placed in heritage-listed sites in the Kelvin Grove area:

To find this cache you will first need to answer some questions about these historically significant locations. You do not need to find or even visit the other caches to answer these questions, but it might be nice to visit the places you will be reading about.

Ok, here is your test:

  1. Who was responsible for the design of the surface air raid shelters? (A = letters in surname)
  2. When did Gona barracks officially close? (199B)
  3. When did the student residences win an award for civic design from the RAIA? (198C)
  4. In which year did the Ithaca Town Council exhibit photographs of showing their expertise in street improvement at the Australian Town Planning Conference and Exhibition? (191D)
  5. Who owned AMA House, then Huntstanton House, before its purchase by the BMA in the 1950s? (E = letters in surname)

The answers to these question can be found easily on the public web, especially if you start by looking at the other KG Heritage cache listings.

Once you have answered these questions you need to find and visit AMA house, which is near, but not at, the listed coordinates. Once you are at AMA house you will find two white bollards outside the main entrance. Record the coordinates of the left hand bollard (when facing the entrance), and apply the following offset to find the final cache location:

S +0.(A-B)(C+E)(E-C) E -0.(D-A)(D)(B) (minutes)

I hope you enjoyed learning about some of Kelvin Grove's heritage, and I hope this cache made you work a little. Happy hunting.
