Geocache Description:

"The wages of..."? "Ugly as..."? [93]

Do not climb the cliff!!! DO NOT CLIMB THE CLIFF!!!

Let us repeat that: DO NOT, REPEAT, DO NOT CLIMB THE CLIFF!!!!!!!!!

The view used to be a lot nicer before they built all the housing and such down there, when it was trees and a small meadow with that old red barn. And we think that the name has a nicely-ironic tone, considering who owns a lot of the land down below. We mean no disrespect, and we do not argue with the necessity for a lot of the construction: far from it! The University waited a long time before expanding, and they could have used some of these new buildings years ago. Still, understanding the need doesn't mean that we have to like the result.

In any event, there is still a lot to recommend this spot. Most of the views are still nice, and it is certainly peaceful enough, all things considered, despite the occasional barking dog or ATV. There is no trail, just a lot of game paths; for most of the year, growth isn't so bad that most people can't get to it with a little care. There is some cactus and jumping cholla scattered about, but it is very easy to avoid. May through August might be a bit tough, but we came up here twice in street shoes, and despite slightly soggy ground, it took no more than 15 minutes. We used the ClayJar rating for the round-about, wimpy route we used, but we know some who might try a more-direct approach But we still think that it better if you DON'T CLIMB THE CLIFF!

The cache is a green plastic tube, roughly 7" long by 3" wide, that used to have nuts in it. It's been waterproofed a little, and has rocks over it. What else would it be up here on this basalt ridge?

Best parking is at the end of Camino De Celeste, but there are other ways in. Look for a bent pole with a "Buried Petroleum Pipeline" sign on it, near a "Buried High-Pressure Gas Line" sign. This is the best access; from there, you are on your own. Have fun! Tread lightly. Enjoy the wildflowers, if you come in the Spring
