This will take you on a nice walk through a little-known nature
preserve. The trail has an elevation change of about 200 feet in
one section, otherwise it's relatively level. The cache is a small
container with a logbook, pencil and pencil sharpener. There is
room for coins and very small TB's.
Welcome to the Stewart Preserve. This 123 acre preserve has about 2 miles of trails, leading through beautiful hardwood forests, hemlock forest and wetland. The preserve is owned by the Nature Conservancy, from whom permission was granted to place this cache here.
Parking at: N 42 36.158 W 073 32.104 Parking is limited to a few cars. Be careful not to block private driveways. Follow the right-of-way path straight ahead to the preserve entrance. The trail begins at the register box. Please be sure to sign in at the register.
The main trail is a loop and is marked by orange tags on trees; there is a .75 mile spur trail, also a loop, marked with blue. This cache is on the blue trail. There is poison ivy here in season and, as with all areas of the Northeast, the potential for ticks, so please take appropriate precautions.
There is much to enjoy in this preserve, with a large variety of ferns and wildflowers. It's a great place for birdwatching, and you may even get to see deer and raccoons here as well. Barred owls inhabit
these woods and, if you take time to listen, you may hear their calls.
