Geocache Description:

This cache can be found in a very popular, slightly hilly park near the town Nagykálló in the north-east of Hungary next door to Transylvania, Ukraine or Slovakia. It's a normal size plastic box. Be careful if you are with children because there is a crumbling stable nearby!

Harangod is a natural leisure centre dominated by a lake where visitors can enjoy boating, a forest, a couple of small sandy hills with a watchtower on one of them and a large clearing providing home for a series of unique buildings including a dance hall, a reception building and a textile and blacksmith's workshop. Some of them stand out from the rest by virtue of their expressive force carrying the signs of traditional folk architecture based on woodwork. The dance "barn" on the edge of the clearing resembles a helmet decorated with two wings, but from the other side of the lake it looks like a bird which is right about to lift off ground.

During the summers cultural and arts camps are organized here and children are taught ancient songs, dances and crafts, like weaving, pottery, woodcarving, basket making, leatherwork and blacksmithing.

The name Harangod means "your bell" in Hungarian. According to a local legend during the Mongol invasion of Hungary (mid-13th century) the villagers fled Nagykálló to escape the Mongol hordes, and at the urging of their priest they took the church bell with them, so that it won't be destroyed when the Mongols burn the village, but accidentally dropped it into the swamps outside the town. They couldn't save it, but later, when they went back to the town, it is said that sometimes they heard the sound of the bell coming from afar. When this happened people told the priest, "Listen, Father, there's your bell". That is how this area got its name.

In Harangod you can watch the starry summer sky at night, hear the laughter of sledging kids in winter, see ground squirrels running about, or simply enjoy the quiet, almost untouched surroundings. You will definitely be filled up with energy!
