Geocache Description:

This cache was originally a multi stage. We decided to change this to a traditional cache so more cachers would visit the site. There is a re-enactment of the battle on the first weekend of December. For more information on the Goldsborough Bridge or re-enactment visit http://www.goldsboroughbridge.com/index.html.

Both the Union and Confederate forces wanted control of the railroad bridge that crossed the Neuse River. The Confederate forces used the bridge to move troops from Wilmington to Goldsboro. On December 17, 1862 the Union forces set the bridge on fire and destroyed it. If you walk the trail a little beyond the cache you'll be able to see the railroad tracks and "new" bridge when you visit this site. Bring your dog and walk the trails. Restoring this site is a Boy Scout's Eagle Project. Let's help him keep it clean and neat by removing any trash that accumulates. To access the cache you will not need to disturb any of the fences or other objects that he has built. The battleground is only open daylight hours. He has requested that no one be on the property after dark. Have fun hunting and enjoy the history.
