Geocache Description:

Walleye in a lake near you
Frank Mathie

April 27, 2004 (Orland Park) - For many Midwest fishermen there is no greater catch than Walleye. Until recently, it was mostly found in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Canada. But now, some Cook County forest preserve lakes and ponds are getting stocked with Walleye.
Tampier Lake in unincorporated Orland Park. Its 120 acres used to be filled with stunted Blue Gills but now, because of a Cook County forest preserve Walleye stocking program, it is the north woods in the suburbs. It starts with just hatched walleye fry. Just eyes and tails.

"What we have here are about 150,000 walleye fry. They just hatched in the last few days. AND THEY ARE GOING? They're going here into Tampier Lake. We'll be putting in these guys in along with about a total of about 850,000 today," said Jim Phillips a fisheries biologist for Cook County.

But before they can release them they place the bags into the water. But, why?

"We're tempering the walleye. Right now the water in the bag is a little bit cooler than the water in the lake so we get the temperature close to the same temperature so the fry don't get shocked and die on us," said Scott Bullard a fisheries biologist for Cook County.

Every spring the forest preserve nets adult Walleye here. The eggs are stripped and fertilized and then the fry are returned to Tampier Lake.

"A Walleye is a freshwater fish that's in the same family as the perch that you find in Lake Michigan but it's a lot larger," Bullard said.

In a few years these fry could weigh up to ten to twelve pounds, and they're great tasting.

For these Walleye fry it is now a battle to survive. Survival of the fittest, survival of the luckiest.

"We should be bringing back close to a million walleye fry this season. Of those, only about one percent will make it to adulthood which is about 16 to 18 inches," said Jim Phillips.

No doubt about it. It's a jungle out there.

I use to bring my kids fishing here many years ago. Never caught a walleye though. This is a nice area to enjoy a family picnic as you will see many doing so. Their is boat rentals up by the main entrance. Might be easier with one tackling this cache.

I hope you enjoy it out here. You are looking for a 30cal ammo can. Good luck my friends...Kro.
