“INDIANA SPIRIT
QUEST”
The Indiana Spirit Quest series of
geocaches will take you to a number of historic cemeteries and
historic sites built by Hoosier Pioneers. In just over two
years, the quest has grown to five hundred caches hidden in
Indiana, Ohio and Michigan and Ontario and the hiders have grown to
THIRTY cacher teams, most of which are comprised of Dogs and
their Humans. Over 1,000 cacher teams have
logged over 20,500 finds. .

INDIANA SPIRIT QUEST
#554
"Center Friends
Cemetery"
This quest will bring you to the Center
Friends Cemetery on the border of Hendricks and Marion counties. It
is just on the Marion County side of the line. The earliest burial
I saw was from 1862. There is also evidence of a recent burial.
However, there have been less than 100 burials in over 145 years.
The name of the cemetery is interesting as the cemetery is not
close to the center of a town, township or county. There is no
doubt a story there somewhere. A gravel parking area is located in
te NW corner of the cemetery.
WW II Hero
As is usual for Quaker cemeteries, there are few headstones that
note military service. This is the exception, and a notable
exception it is. The Distinguished Flying Cross is the Air Forces
2nd highest award for bravery, behind only the Medal of Honor.
Unfortunately, the US government did not retain copies of the
citations for DFC awards. A Society for DFC winners or their
descendants has been formed. Their website can be found at
http://www.dfcsociety.org. You can find much more information on
the DFC there, but it will take a family member of Mr. Dillon to
shed light on the actions that led to his earning the DFC.
Ornate Headstone
This headstone immediately caught my attention, as most of the
headstones here are rather plain. Plus there are no veterans buried
here, which is not suprising considering this is a small Quaker
cemetery.
