Geocache Description:

Believe it or not!

The Portsmouth Daily times wrote on June 17, 1999 that “the legend of Bigfoot has been told for centuries, but some local residents have come forward to say it is more than a legend. Some residents claim to have seen Bigfoot, smelled Bigfoot and even been lifted off the ground by Bigfoot!”

The Ohio Bigfoot Research Team says it has investigated eyewitness accounts of reported encounters with Bigfoot like creatures in Shawnee State and Wayne National Forest lands. Shawnee State and Wayne National Forests represent a vast tract of wilderness land that together totals over 280,000 acres in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains that borders the Ohio River. The national forest lands stretch into several counties across Southern Ohio, including Gallia, Lawrence, Scioto and Vinton Counties.

Bigfoot reports have been generated within these localities for a number of years, dating back to an unusual instance in 1869, in which a father and daughter pair encountered a frightening, gorilla-like "wild-man" near Gallipolis, Ohio.

The following is an excerpt from the Bigfoot Research Organization:

Report # 4976 (Class A)

YEAR: 1990, Second Sighting
SEASON: Fall
MONTH: October
STATE: Ohio
COUNTY: Scioto County
“OBSERVED: I was 18 then just out of high school and was camping with friends behind my parents house in the Shawnee forest. I remember now that one of my friends said that he felt as though we were being watched and he was very uncomfortable and didn't leave the area of the fire much. We had heard something moving across the field from where we were camped and I wanted to see what it was. The moon was bright that night and afforded a fairly good look at what was going on. Along the tree line was a possible sasquatch walking slightly hunched over but looking toward the camp fire and the camp area in general. I remember his eyes flashing red as the fire would reflect in them. It cleared the field in very short time and headed into a small ravine. We didn't hear it or see it again. This was in October of 1990.

Seemed to be between 7 and 7 1/2 feet tall. Dark hair color most likely black or a very dark brown. The head came to a slight point at the top, eyes seemed smallish and would reflect red at night. Chest was large and barrel like, arms longer than that of a man, stout thick legs. Nose was broad and flat and mouth jutted out slightly, ape like.

First sighting- 1980

I was young anywhere from 8-10 years old, I was awakened one morning by the sounds of our dogs baying and running around the house and under the porch. I got up and looked out my window to see this creature standing in the edge of the forest, roughly 70 feet away across a small stream and the road. I watched it for what seemed like forever but was probably only a minute or two at the most before it casually turned and walked back into the woods and up the hill. Late fall is when this took place. We have heard screams both day and night and observed tracks and smelled a stench somewhere between sulphur (rotten eggs) and a strong musk.

OTHER STORIES: I have heard stories before of a bigfoot like creature being seen in the Cut Rock area which isn’t far from Peach Orchard Hill. There have also been reports of a sasquatch creature in the area of the Vern Riffe CCC Camp and Picnic Point and Camp Oyo.

If you look at a topographical map, these ridges are all connected. A creature could travel from Peach Orchard to Picnic Point in a matter of a few days. I found a connection between the area of my parents house, Camp Oyo and the old Riffe Three C camp. Not only do the ridges connect, but I found an old map of the forest unused logging roads. There is a logging road that goes from cut rock, Peach Orchard Hill and one of the main hiking trails that leads right to Camp Oyo and then on to the Three C Camp and Picnic Point. This is probably the routes traveled by the creature and makes sense with the timing and location of the sightings.”

There have been numerous accounts of Bigfoot Sightings in Southern Ohio on internet sites such as ‘The American Bigfoot Society”, “The Ohio Bigfoot Research Team Website”, and “The Sasquatch Sightings Database”. They say Bigfoot reports from areas of Southern Ohio represents a legitimate mystery worthy of serious scientific scrutiny. The reports and witnesses, sometimes very credible, are not taken seriously by the appropriate wildlife officers and scientific communities.

Bigfoot researchers admit that many aspects of the ongoing accounts regarding a Bigfoot-type creature in the Shawnee State and Wayne National Forest areas remain unsubstantiated. The stories are largely relegated to 'rumor and hearsay', although some of the reports have been documented and investigated by researchers. The researchers say that no substantial evidence is known to support the eyewitness data. Thus, the mystery continues.

This series of geocaches highlights their stories.
