SUMNER’S INDUSTRIAL PIONEERS Emmanuel Pasquier (B:1881 France) came to Sumner in 1914 to work as a planer for the Hewitt-Lea-Funck Company, that pioneered sales of ready made (prefabricated) homes. The plant was then located between Zehnder and Puyallup Streets at the North end of town. In 1922 Funck built the 18,000 square foot ‘sawtooth’ building on what is the present site of Pasquier Panel Products (now over 200,000 square feet) and went into the silo business with 10-15 employees. During the 20’s the business expanded to include such products as wheel barrows, baby bouncers, and floor boards for Model A cars. They even manufactured plywood running boards for Chrysler. Willard Young brought the company in 1933 and during World War II. The Willard V. Young Company produced plywood parts for Landing Craft (Ducks) and Quonset Huts. Mike Pasquier, first worked at the plant at age 11, and in 1945 presented the idea to build GM bus floorboards. After Willard Young’s death in 1952, Mike and Charlie Pasquier bought the company and a few years later changed the name to Pasquier Panel Products.
