Gresford Halt kicked the bucket Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Southerntrekker: Hi There

As the owner has not responded to either my log or my colleague's previous log requesting that they check this cache I am archiving it.

Please note that once the cache has been archived, this can not be undone. This is explained in the Help Center - http://support.groundspeak.com//index.php?pg=kb.page&id=70

You will need to create a new listing, put it back in for review and as long as it meets today's guidelines and no other caches have been published in the area causing a proximity problem, then it will be published.

Regards

Geocache Description:

The cache is close to the single track branch line which runs from Chester to Wrexham and beyond down to Shrewsbury.

I suggest you park near the end of Springfield Lane as its a slightly nicer walk and the other end of the path is a bit scruffy. See co-ordinates below.

The railway was built in 1844 to carry passengers and minerals. There used to be a two storey station and station-masters house at Gresford Halt station, which lasted until the 1950s when it was closed during Dr Beeching’s review of the railways. A bit further along the line at N53 05.420 W2 58.469 is Blackie’s footbridge, named after what used to happen to your face if you leaned over when a train was passing!

This cache used to be part of an archived series and remains as a regular cache. I kept this one and renamed it. You are looking for a screw top plastic drink container.

There has been a settlement in Gresford as long ago as Roman times and probably back to the bronze age before that. Nowadays there are 7 pubs and a good little selection of shops in the village centre. It has a fine medieval church, All Saints, whose bells have been named one of the seven Wonders of Wales since the 1700’s. If you want to find out more about the history of Gresford, I recommend the book, “Gresford Village and Church, and Royal Marford” (1995) ISBN 0 9519772 1 0, by Dr Colin Jones.
