Geocache Description:

Near the summit of Mynydd Tal-y-mignedd at around 2000 ft above sea level.

This is the first of a series of caches which I hope to place on summits or interesting places in the mountains of England, Wales or Scotland during the regular visit that I and other members of West Bromwich Mountaineering Club make to the hills. WBMC is a friendly club with members (aged 6 months to 85 years) mainly drawn from a 25 mile radius of West Bromwich. It runs monthly coach trips (normally to the Lake District or Snowdonia), hostel and bothy weekends, European trips in summer and a winter week in Scotland. The club has it’s own hut in Nantgwynant with all mod cons and organises and navigation skills and family weekends there several times each year. It meets every Thursday at “The Horse & Jockey” in Stoney lane, West Bromwich (B71 4EZ) from 9pm (-ish) onwards. See www.wbmc.org.uk for details of meets & events.

Mynydd Tal-y-mignedd (The Mountain at the End of the Bog) is 1½ miles from the nearest road. It is perhaps the most interesting, though not the highest, summit on the Nantlle Ridge, which is one of the finest high level ridge walks in Wales, stretching for around 6 miles over 6 summits. However, there is a lot of ascent and descent even although the route only drops once below the 2000 foot contour. There is a good path most of the way and some spectacular cliffs and drops, particularly to the north. One of the problems in tackling the whole ridge is getting back to the start. At time of writing a local bus company will shuttle people back to Rhyd Ddu, Talysarn or Penygroes for a small fare (call 01286 679535).

This easy to find cache is NW of the summit on slightly sloping ground to the right of the path if you're heading to Trum y Ddysgl. It is very exposed to the wind and other walkers doing this part of the ridge but you can sit nonchalantly on the rock, appearing to admire the view (if there is one!)

The main feature of Mynydd Tal-y-mignedd is the tall square stone tower which was built by quarry workers to commemorate the Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. This is tallest summit cairn I know, around 20 ft high, and you might want to combine Mynydd Tal-y-mignedd (WBMC1)with the Queen Vic's Pillar microcache if you feel you are a competent climber. As West Brom's Captain Cag (the man you can't gag) would say, “The mountains will always be there, the trick is to stay alive so you can enjoy them.”

2013: A big THANK YOU to fitzydan & The Royston Mob for doing some maintenance when it was necessary and saving me a 200 mile round trip plus a lot of huffing and puffing to replace a damp log book. I love this ridge but the caches on it are tricky to maintain!
