Who would expect to find a 40 ft. totem pole in a shopping and recreation area of San Mateo? But, here one stands and it has for 52 years. It was placed at the entrance to a bowling alley by Ray Stevenson when he opened the alley in the mid 1950's. He wanted a way to honor the Indians of British Columbia and the farming industry he came from in Canada.
Originally you entered this establishment by walking over an arched Japanese-style bridge, crossing over reflecting pools. This tribute was featured in Life magazine the year after it was put up. There are also four tribal mosaic sculptures on display in the 'Totem Lounge.'
The building was designed by Pat DeRosa who commisioned the unknown sculptor to create the pole.
The cache is placed in honor of the man who thought up "Totem Bowl." He is not a geocacher, but a creative thinker. The cache is mine, the title is his. Thanks, Bob.
Please bring a pen.
